The old man felt he played second fiddle all of his life, which is a very sad comment on how he perceived his life. Everyone is a bright star to someone, even if only for a short while. Perhaps the Matriarch feels the same way, that she played second fiddle all of her life, and only got recognized when she turned 100; only then did she feel her bright star had shone: she was finally in the limelight. Or, maybe both centenarians were born narcissists.
Wonderful quote from Marshal McLuhan: 'Zeus to Narcissus: "Watch yourself."'
